Ch. 5
“All Exps have a capsule. Your capsule is right here,” said Kawai sweetly as she put her ear to Exp 8’s chest.
“Isn’t that my heart?”
“Actually the anatomical dictionary says it all. It is a fibrous, membranous, or fatty envelope that encloses an organ or part. In this case, it envelopes the artifact,” said Ada.
“Yep, that’s right. Exps don’t have hearts. What we have is like a solar conductor about the size of a fist. You and I are powered by sunlight. We don‘t need to eat, sleep, or even breathe. Capsules are efficient at storing and dispersing energy throughout our bodies. They also don’t make that dreadful thumping noise that hearts do. Here, listen to my capsule.” Kawai pressed her chest against Exp 8’s ears. “It makes a soothing, flowing sound, like a current through a river. That is the sound of eternity. It’s proof I’m alive.”
